Journalist, novelist, tale weaver 1848-1917
Writing was in the blood of J Henry Harris, son of Josiah Harris, journalist, of Mevagissey. Josiah Henry Harris was born in Plymouth in 1848, then lived in England as a child. He became a journalist, first working in Bristol and Wales, then settling in London where he worked as a Parliamentary reporter and as a reporter for the Central News Agency.
He retired to Mevagissey, to Colona, a house he had built on the cliffs, and continued writing, books and stories infused with Cornish folklore and a sense of place. ‘Cornish Saints and Sinners’ 1906, a walk around Cornwall with retellings of folktales woven in, is the source of some of the best loved Mazed tales. He died in Mevagissey.
