Richard Carew

Antiquary, translator, MP       1555-1620

Richard Carew, member of Cornish gentry from Antony near Torpoint.

Studied law at Oxford, then the Temple, and travelled abroad.

MP for Saltash 1584, High Sheriff and Deputy Lieutenant  of Cornwall 1586.

Ground-breaking writer and member of the Elizabethan Society of Antiquities, his Survey of Cornwall, 1602, was only the second county history published in England, dedicated to his friend Sir Walter Raleigh, Lord Lieutenant of Cornwall.

The Survey covered places, people, animals, Cornish language, plants, fishing, mining, with the odd tale or bit of folklore woven in.

Carew also translated poetical and medical works from Italian to English.
